History of appearance

In 1832, a British inventor named James Snell created a mechanical chair with the ability to adjust the angle of the backrest and footrest. His invention was highly appreciated by dentists.

About 20 years before Snell, the English architect William Pocock proposed the concept of a chair on which one could sit in a reclining position. It was possible to take a nap on it, receive guests and chat with them, and also read - the design included a built-in table for books.

It had what are the hallmarks of a modern recliner - a padded backrest and a retractable footrest. By 1880, such furniture was sold en masse throughout Europe and became famous in the United States, where Gustav Stickley modified it slightly. In his product, the angle of the backrest could be adjusted.

In 1928, Americans Edward Knabusch and Edwin Shoemaker proposed a different take on this type of furniture. In their minds, it was intended primarily for women who valued coziness and comfort.

The real boom of advertisers began in the United States in the 1960s. Advertising starring A-list pop stars meant that political and geographic boundaries could no longer contain the proliferation of ultra-comfortable, adjustable chairs. They conquered all continents.

The key feature of a recliner chair is transformation. There are different types of mechanisms, there are models with fewer or more functions, but the basic principle has remained the same for decades: the furniture on which a person is sitting is transformed, at the touch of a lever or button, or by touching a touch panel, so that it can be used to lie on.
